About
I am a public school Art Teacher based in Calgary, Alberta. Calico Moon Pottery was born during the pandemic when quarantined. With a bit of time (and lot of clay on my hands) I started dreaming of sharing my own pottery with the world.
I prefer to use slab-built methods to handcraft my pieces and I've developed my own sculptural methods to create a variety of shapes. I am particularly facinated with the decorative process of the mishima carving technique. I haven't met a piece of clay I didn't want to carve ... and then colour! The majority of my work reflects my colourful "mosaic" carvings that are individually hand painted before any glazing of the mug begins. My designs are inspired by nature, particularly the nearby Rocky mountains, and imaginative abstract trees that I wish I could meet in real life. Many of these trees resemble the abundant apple trees I grew up with in the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia... but sometimes they take on a life of their own and the results surprise me!
I love that pottery can serve a functional purpose in addition to being a form of artistic expression. I started out as a portrait artist and acrylic painter and I still do paint, but these days most of my paintings are miniature and are made on a stoneware canvas I have created by hand. The entire process of making pottery is a challenge that brings me joy, but I especially enjoy the delight that my creative efforts bring to others with they share or receive one of my creations!
